From our charming hotel in Vichy, discover the history and renown of the town. A jewel in the crown of the Auvergne, Vichy has been a thriving spa town since the 2nd century. Several springs were tapped and exploited, and a \"spa town\" was established along the Roman road that roughly follows the present-day route of rue Callou and avenue Victoria. A \"thermal establishment\" was already located in what is now the Parc des Sources.<\/p>

In the early 17th century, a General Superintendence of Mineral Baths and Fountains was created by letters patent from King Henry IV. This marked a renaissance for the waters of Vichy. The spa industry, and consequently the town's reputation, continued to grow. Madame de S\u00e9vign\u00e9 praised the virtues of the waters of Vichy, as they enabled her to regain the use of her pen. The daughters of Louis XV and Napoleon's mother came to take the waters. But it was not until Napoleon III that Vichy took off in a phenomenal way. The emperor discovered the town in 1861, returned every year and became Vichy's \"benefactor\". Money poured in, turned into stone and parks and transformed the town into the \"queen of the spa towns\".<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Between 1861 and 1866, Napoleon III took five cures in Vichy. Under his impetus, town planning projects profoundly transformed the town: damming of the Allier and replacement of the old marshes by English-style parks, development of thermal roads, construction of the Town Hall, a casino in the Parc des Sources, and the building of chalets and pavilions to house the emperor and the imperial suite.<\/p>
